Research on the inclusion of Humanism and secular world views in RE

    I went on a school governor training evening last week. Right at the start, the lecturer said “There is something called Circular 1/94 but I’m not going to talk about that”. This perplexed me as I thought I was there to learn about implementing the ‘new RE syllabus’. I came out of the meeting struggling to really disagree with anything (Something I’m normally unable to do)and none the wiser about circular 1/94 but I now see why.

    Having said this, the lecturer did say that numbers of teachers wanting to teach RE was dwindling as was interest in the subject (This from a ‘born again’ christian herself. The importance that headteachers placed on RE was very low and it was gently being squeezed out of the school day.What she did outline was a subject about the ‘big questions’ in life which encouraged observation,introspection and children thinking for themselves.These aims I would agree with as would most Humanists or indeed any thinking person?

    To this end, I have a new bumper sticker on my mobility scooter and have enjoyed bringing people’s attention to it in the school playground each morning. It’s one advertising the Richard Dawkins Institute for Reason & Science. It’s proved quite a talking point I can tell you……….

    We’ll have to start a new group – Humanists in mobility scooters.

    What you say about RE is true. Despite the efforts of religious types to keep it in the curriculum, I think it’s unlikely to get pushed up the priority list.
